Measure the foot first

A pull-on boot has nothing to cinch, so length is the one thing you cannot correct once the pair is on. Stand on a sheet of paper, mark the heel and the longest toe, and measure between the marks. That number is what our grid answers to.

How to take the measurement

Late in the day. A foot spreads as the day goes on. Measure in the evening and you measure the foot the boot has to hold at its widest.
Standing, in the sock you will wear. Weight on the foot changes the length. A thick boot sock changes it again.
Heel against a wall. Put the paper against a skirting board, press the heel to it, and mark the paper at the longest toe. That is not always the big toe.
Both feet. They differ. Work from the longer one.

Why there is no men's grid here

Our men's boots are not all built on the same last. Across our own charts a pair marked size 8 measures anywhere from 9.4 to 11.1 inches inside, and that gap is wider than the step between sizes. Averaging it would hand you a number no boot actually is. So every men's page carries the chart for that pair, and the length to read is the one printed there.

About the shaft

Once the size is settled the second question is whether the shaft closes. We publish an opening figure on 191 of our 312 pages, so the bench can only sort those. Where a pair carries a full chart we read the opening at your size; where the tag gives a single figure we say which size it was taken on. Measure the calf at its widest, sitting, over the sock.
